Nowadays almost everything is digital and connected. Even cars are able to interact with each other. The “Digital Age” is more considerable than ever before. You and I might notice the massive change in the world we are living in and the new lifestyle. A few years ago, smartphones were not commonly used for us. Now they are an integral part of almost everyone’s life. Surfing online, watching YouTube videos, listening to Spotify podcasts or interacting via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are common today.
51% of the world population uses the internet in 2017, according to statistics of the “Internet World States”. That means, without borders and border controls people from different cultures, religions, social ranks and mindsets interact on the newly created space internet.
What does this means for the concept of culture? Isn’t the culture specific to each country? To which country does the internet does belong? What if country borders disappear because of worldwide digital networking through the internet? And what about language?
First, let’s start to focus on the language. Just because it’s easier to measure the frequency of languages than the appearance of culture in the internet. According to the “Web Technology Surveys”, more than 50% of the websites worldwide are in English.
David Crystal from Norther Ireland, a British linguist and author, said in an interview at the British Council in 2013, that English could become the global language. And he furthermore specified it and called it “lingual franca English”. From his point of view, many versions “English” existed and one of these were cultural indefinable. Over years and years because of international collaboration new “Englishes” are being born.
It seems like the importance of the English language is higher than ever before. Imagine: The Company you are working with is expanding worldwide to benefit from the wage differentials and globally available expertise. The originally team you have been working with is now day by day growing by Indian, Spanish and Russian employees. With the globalization of a company and the global digital exchange via internet, company rules are undergoing change. The company culture and language has to be an overlap of all employees to make effective collaboration possible.
It seems to be a global language is required in companies. And it seems like English communication is a feasible international solution. As language is so dependent on culture, a global culture in international companies is also required. As we are use ‘Global Culture’ at work and probably in our leisure time, we are highly influenced by it. Moreover, colleagues, whose variety of internationality increase, are becoming our friends. The result might be that we are interacting in a global tone around the clock at work as well as in private life, in the digital and analog world.
Isn’t it a great opportunity to become a “Global Citizen”?
